Sole In-House Lawyer: Head of Legal

Fantastic opportunity - a key appointment for our client, which seeks an experienced lawyer to step into a sole in-house lawyer role and work closely with the COO and wider executive team.
This would suit a senior in-house lawyer who is able to take full responsibility for managing the legal function.
The Organisation
Our client provides strategic oversight of investment, actuarial, and pension administration matters. It is responsible for member communication, regulatory and operational matters. Assets overseen by our client are in the region of £19 billion. It is a dynamic and complex environment with the exec and investment team based in Sheffield and London.
The Role
Standalone Head of Legal. You will primarily work with the Sheffield based executive but also spend some time working with the London based investments team and external law firms and advisers (occasional travel to London required).
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the wider executive team, you will take a holistic approach to legal and compliance matters.
You will work across multiple business areas whilst ensuring robust legal and regulatory oversight, with duties to include:
- legal guidance across Risk, IT, HR and Governance
- embed legal strategy and processes into the business
- manage external legal counsel
- legal support on investment contracts (including negotiations with asset managers, consultants and advisers)
- legal oversight on structuring investment vehicles and mitigating risks
- horizon scanning and monitoring regulatory developments
- compliance with FCA regulations, anti money laundering policies, and pension related legal requirements
About You
Although our client is a FCA regulated, and some regulated experience would be useful, it is not a pre-requisite if you are prepared to upskill (with support) on the investments / regulatory side. Most important, is that you will be a level headed, commercial, experienced and capable in-house lawyer able to handle a range of matters independently and manage external lawyers.
You will be a technically capable lawyer with strong negotiation skills and a commercial outlook. You will have the appetite and credibility to take ownership of the Legal and Regulatory Compliance function as well as the flexibility to adapt to business need. You will be an effective communicator and problem solver, with a proactive and solutions focused approach.
